Acting Post- Five Goals for the Semester

Vacation is over. A much needed vacation indeed. I managed to relax and put eveything out of my mind for one whole week. My skin was amazing, the salt water made my hair perfectly fluffy and flowy, and I got these super cute blue sunglasses for a dollar! (I know everyone is wearing this style but I do love them.)

But enough about vacation for now! I need to go through photos to decide what will make the cut so I can compose a delightful post.

Upon my return I started schooling for massage therapy. The idea behind this move is that I'll have a job that I might actually enjoy and it'll give me a flexible schedule for auditions and what not.
However it is becoming quickly apparent that school and work leave little time for frivolous things like living out your passion. So I have decided that I need to set some 'Acting Goals' for myself in order to ensure it doesn't drop into my 'once upon a time'. I might be paranoid but if you've seen Up in the Air then you've seen J.K. Simmons' performance from Up in the Air:

*Possible Spoilers Ahead!*  (Although nothing that would ruin the movie.)

When Ryan Bingham is firing this guy, Bob, Bingham points out he has culinary skills on his resume. It turns out that Bob had taken the cushy high paying desk job and hung his dreams of becoming a chef out to dry.
I do not want to wake up in 20 years having settled because I didn't feel like working any harder.
So here are five of my acting goals for the semester. (Not in any order)

1. Take at least two Silvana Gallardo acting classes.
Silvana Gallardo is this excellent teacher and actress who landed in Kentucky to recuperate after an illness. Every time a leave her class I feel more confident in my own abilities and better suited for the 'biz'. The only problem is the class is only offered twice a month and one of those times is a 2 hours drive away.

2. Create one AMAZING character for myself.
I've been noticing that all of the kick ass women on television, or in the movies, are brunnette. (And even then guys are still more prominent) Any time a blonde is portrayed it's normally her being a ditz until she learns her lesson in not being an air-head. So sick of it. Blondes havent had a really good name since Buffy and even she started out as a vain cheerleader. Also has anyone else noticed that the only super hero from the new Avengers that hasn't gotten their own movie is Black Widow? She had ONE kick ass scene in Iron Man 2 and that was only so guys could drool over her flexibility and leather uniform. But I digress. This could turn into a whole othe blog post.

3. Find one class on comedic acting and find some exercises to do on my own.
Dramatic tends to be easier just because you don't have to think as much about the next line or perhaps I'm just not as skilled at letting the next line flow. Either way I want to get better at and become more comfortable with comedy.

4. Write, film, and edit at least two skits for youtube.
I have acces to a camera and editing system and I need to take advantage of that. I've been meaning to write more and I think filming some short things on my own could force me to learn a little bit about cameras and editing.

5. Film myself acting at least once a week so I can watch myself and see what needs work.
I've been meaning to do this for a while but it seems more crucial now that I won't be able to audition for as many things. I need to look for exercises to record and see what works for me. Another thing I need to figure out with this is how to suit myself up for theatre as well as film. Should be interesting.

Another thing I've been thinking about (This isn't necessarily a goal because I'm not sure I can make the commitment just yet) is a social acting group. I think if a bunch of local actors got together and just performed for one another twice a month that would be tremendous. You wouldn't have to pay big bucks for any class it would just be actors getting together to trade tips and support. If that progresses at all I'll let you know.

So who out there has a passion? What do you need to do to make sure it doesn't slip into the attic of your life?
Set some small, managebale goals that you can work toward while you're forced to do something else like school or 'a real job'. Eventually you'll have to take a leap and hope you land alright, but I think setting smaller goals like this can help build your confidence to take that leap.

Create onward,
E.M.G.
